We had set out into the Tallgrass Prairie of Oklahoma in search of wildlife, watching the horizon and scanning the open country for anything that might move among the grasses. But sometimes nature has a way of offering an unexpected surprise when you are looking for something else entirely.

Along the way, we came upon an area filled with the delicate beauty of Snow on the Mountain, Euphorbia marginata. Clusters of brilliant white seemed to drift across the prairie landscape like a late-season snowfall, their star-shaped forms standing in striking contrast against the rich greens surrounding them.

Native to North America, Snow on the Mountain—also known as Mountain Snow spurge—is an annual wildflower that can reseed itself and return year after year. While wildlife may have been the original reason for our journey, this beautiful patch of prairie reminded me that sometimes the most memorable discoveries are the ones you never set out to find.
