The Quirky Bug Ranch

The whimsical Bug Ranch roadside attraction features colorful Volkswagen Beetles mounted on a roof. The site includes vibrant signage and retro-themed decor.

In the 1990s, the Crutchfield Family brought the Slug Bug Ranch to life in Conway, Texas, aiming to draw travelers toward their Longhorn Trading Post and Rattlesnake Ranch. The unique display of half-buried VW bugs quickly became a Route 66 icon, embodying the spirit of adventure for countless travelers along the historic highway.

For over 20 years, Slug Bug Ranch symbolized Route 66’s quirky charm. However, in late 2023, the removal of the original bugs cast doubt on its future, sparking concern and nostalgia among fans nationwide. In 2024, The Big Texan Steak Ranch purchased the beloved bugs, ensuring their preservation and creating a new home where they would remain accessible to the public.
