The Tepees

The conical, tent-like hills in Petrified Forest National Park are called The Tepees. These formations are composed of banded mudstones and are named for their resemblance to tepees. They are located about 14 miles from the park's north entrance and are part of the Painted Desert area. The Tepees are the result of erosion, where harder, layered mudstones eroded into conical shapes. The area was named by park rangers and visitors who thought the hills looked like tepees, although the use of tepees is not specific to the region's Native American cultures.
