High above the tree line at 11,400 feet, the weathered remains of the Frisco-Bagley Mill stand as one of Colorado's most remarkable reminders of the state's mining heritage. Built in 1912 just outside the historic ghost town of Animas Forks, this prefabricated concentration mill processed valuable ore hauled from the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Though it operated for only a brief period before closing in 1914, its towering wooden framework has endured more than a century of brutal winters, fierce mountain winds, and relentless snowfall.

I captured this image while four-wheeling the legendary Alpine Loop Scenic Byway on our way to California Pass. After exploring the quiet streets of Animas Forks, we rounded a bend and were greeted by this incredible relic—its massive timbers twisted and worn, yet still standing against an impossibly blue Colorado sky.

Today, the Frisco-Bagley Mill is more than a decaying structure. It is a monument to the determination, optimism, and hardships of the miners who pursued fortunes in these unforgiving mountains. Every weathered beam and broken support tells a story of ambition, perseverance, and the passage of time, inviting visitors to imagine the bustling activity that once echoed through this now-silent valley.
