There are some wildlife encounters that feel less like a photograph and more like being invited into a private moment in the natural world. While traveling through Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, we came across a moose family on Slumgullion Pass, not far from Lake City.

In the warm glow of the afternoon light, a magnificent bull moved slowly through the tall mountain grasses, with his young calf following close behind. The pair seemed completely at home among the willows and wild vegetation, offering us a beautiful glimpse of life in the high country.

Moments like this are why I love exploring Colorado with a camera in hand. There is something incredibly special about witnessing wildlife simply being wild—unhurried, unaware, and completely connected to the landscape they call home.
